A walker discovered bones and a skull near the mountain village of Le Vernet in southern France. On March 30, 2024, a genetic analysis confirmed that the bones were the remains of the missing Émile.

“I found it in the middle of the path,” the walker tells French TV station BFMTV. Despite the bad weather, she decided to go for a hike on Easter Saturday (March 30) According to her own statements, she left at 12 p.m. without her cell phone or watch. She hasn't walked the route, which is quite busy in summer, for a long time. She didn't want to leave the skull where it was, fearing that the remains could be landslides again in the mountains. She carried the skull in a bag in the front of her body the whole way home. At home she left the item on the terrace. She had to go to the location with investigators, which she remembered from a large fir tree.
