Special topographic maps show landscape structures that are often not visible on the ground or can only be seen by very trained eyes. These maps help historians and local researchers gain new insights and formulate hypotheses.

In the Starnberg district, these “shade maps’ have promoted research into the former castle complex in Andechs and the “Celtic Fields”. The maps on which Gantner based his research come from a public source: The Bavarian State Office for Surveying provides laser data as so-called relief hillshading via the Bavarian Atlas. The study booklet is supplemented with historical images and current photos: “We flew down the mountain with the drone. Florian Scheitler then created 3D views of how one could imagine the castle around the year 1100,” summarizes Dr. Benno C. Gantners.. The State Monuments Office does not recognize the field finds in Forstenrieder Park under threat given the planned construction of several wind turbines.
