The Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to officially make Los Angeles a "sanctuary" city for immigrants. Councilmembers unanimously approved a motion asking city attorneys to write the rule, which will prohibit the use of their resources for compliance with federal immigration laws.

It will also ban immigration authorities from accessing the city's databases. In 2017, the government of then-Mayor Eric Garcetti had issued an executive order limiting collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but there is no approved rule that permanently establishes those standards.
