Bertrand Bonello's film is a science fiction romantic drama, with an explicit message (“don't have emotions and everyone will like you”). The protagonists, Gabrielle and Louis (George MacKay, star of the 1917 film), will then meet again in time, over and over again, jumping from the past to the present and vice versa.

The emergence of artificial intelligence in the future, after a war that is little talked about, is included without pressure in history. Léa Seydoux's character curiously has the same name that the actress from The Life of Adèle, Specter, had when she worked with Woody Allen in Midnight in Paris. It is a romantic drama with touches of science fiction.
