Marseille has 40,000 substandard housing units, or 10% of the city's housing stock. A bill on the subject arrives in the Senate this week.

A former police officer was sentenced to five years in prison for renting out his slums to vulnerable people. The city is now a civil party in the cases concerning slumlords.
