Seven goldfinches were seized in Marseille as part of an investigation into trafficking in these birds. Two suspects were taken into custody in this case, which illustrates the vast trafficking that surrounds these birds, particularly around the Mediterranean.
These birds, sold in particular illicitly on the Marseille flea market, are prized for their beauty and their melodious song. The species is however protected, its nesting population having decreased by 35% in 18 years. The two defendants were summoned to the criminal court.
