Melting ice slows down the Earth's rotation - Earth and Poles. It has consequences on the measurement of time.

For this reason, the introduction of a 'negative leap second', i.e. the subtraction of a second to synchronize the reference clocks with the Earth’s rotation, was initially expected in 2026. This possibility has never been addressed and could create unprecedented problems for satellite navigation systems, computers and financial markets, which rely on UTC. The melting of ice at the poles is already significantly observable and its effects will certainly increase in the future.
