Recep Tayyip Erdogan was re-elected president of Turkey on Sunday. Former Germany international Mesut Özil shared a photo with Erdogan on Instagram.
The 69-year-old had previously been criticized for his support of the Turkish head of state. He had resigned from the German national football team after the World Cup finals in Brazil in June. The German national team lost 2-1 to Argentina in the quarter-finals. The match in Brazil was the first time the Germans had lost to Argentina since the 1950s.
