Guillermo Torres, 39, mayor of Churumuco, and his 14-year-old son “were attacked” by gunfire in a restaurant in Morelia, the capital of Michoacan. Torres won the mayoral election as standard bearer of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 2022.

Mexico, which has 126 million inhabitants, has recorded more than 450,000 murders since 2006, the start of a vast anti-drug offensive launched by then-president Felipe Calderon.
