Mexico broke relations with Ecuador after the raid on its embassy in Quito and the capture of former vice president Jorge Glas. This was ordered by the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The Ecuadorian had received political asylum hours before at the diplomatic headquarters located in quito. Since 2017, Glas has been serving two sentences, one for a bribery case and another related to the Odebrecht case. He was released at the end of November 2022. He had sought refuge in the Mexican embassy inQuito in December 2023.
