The Italian peninsula is plagued by massive arrivals of migrants on its shores. A state of national emergency has been declared there.

Rome expects to have to welcome 200,000 entries by sea this year, which would be a record. Currently, out of ten people who arrive in Europe by sea, nearly eight arrive in Italy. The number of migrants arriving in Italy is expected to be four times more in 2023 than in 2022, according to a report by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM)
