Military tensions in the Middle East are at their highest in years. Observers do not expect the situation to calm down through diplomatic channels.

Military expert Ralph Thiele sees further evidence of attack plans from Iran. The USA would try to prevent an attack by Iran on Israel from leading to a spiral of violence. For Germany, however, this could mean that arms deliveries to the region would have to be expanded. The US journalist David Ignatius comments in the Washington Post that we are at a point where no one wants further escalation, but it seems almost unavoidable. The tightening also sheds light on the fact that the badly hit war-torn Syria, from which millions of people have had to flee, has been at the center of the Iran-Israel conflict for years. Israel's alleged attack on Iran's embassy grounds also took place in Syria's capital Damascus. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy had seized a ship that has connections to Israel and was on its way to Iranian waters after it was arrested on Saturday.
