Valter Mattei and Mauro Valli saved the only survivor of the Moby Prince in 1991. The ferry took fire after the collision with the tanker Agip Abruzzo and 140 passengers and crew died.

"Two ships burning in the middle of the sea - an unimaginable scenario, a feeling of helplessness, but we were there and we went under the burning oil tanker with a seven meter boat without a cabin," says Mattei. "A spectacle of impressive sensations that you can never forget," says the former mooring man, now retired. "We only managed to recover a piece of the lifeboat which we towed to the dock," adds Mattei, who is now 69 years old. "I remember a night with my friend Mauro from the apocalypse, but they saved theonly survivor," he adds. "It was a night that I will never forget", he adds, "a night that changed my life forever" "We were in contact with the commander of the tanker - says the ex-marine - to try to save the members of their crew, when on my radio I listen to the communication from one of the two or three tugboats"
