424 people died in Lower Saxony's road traffic last year. That was 54 traffic deaths or 14.6 percent more than a year earlier.
Main cause of fatal traffic accidents was driving too fast, said Interior Minister Daniela Behrens. More deaths, especially among older people aged 65 and over - namely 141. 21 of them were over 75 years old. More than half of the seniors killed were cycling or walking, and two thirds of them caused the accident themselves. The liberalization of cannabis possession will not change that.
