Wildfire smoke experts say climate change is reshaping natural hazards at a staggering rate. New York and other East Coast cities responded to the wildfire smoke crisis without the same protective laws, preparedness and planning measures as usual on the often smoke-choked West Coast.

"We can probably learn a thing or two from our West Coast friends," says Peter DeCarlo, an associate professor of environmental health and engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The smoke is a reminder that it is difficult, if not impossible, to insulate oneself from the threats associated with climate change.
