Three of the four strands of the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines were severely damaged by multiple underwater explosions on September 26, 2022. The pipelines, more than 1,200 kilometers long, were intended to transport natural gas from Russia directly to Germany. Experts warned that this would make Germany even more dependent on gas supplies from the Kremlin.
