And some of these breakdowns remain inevitable on a network so vast, so busy and, outdoors, at the mercy of heatwaves, torrential rains, animal passages or human damage. The real challenge will be to prevent them from lasting too long, says former network chief Jean-Claude Junker. The challenge is to reduce the duration of incidents so that the 10 million Olympic spectators arrive on time.
