Pope Francis has decided not to attend the Via Crucis to protect his health. He has been suffering from the flu in recent weeks.

He will still attend the Saturday Vigil and the Holy Mass on Easter Sunday. This is the first time since 2003 that a Pope has written the meditations for the event. He also participated in the Passion ceremony that was celebrated in St. Peter's Basilica on Friday. He washed the feet of 12 inmates, wearing a white apron, as Jesus did to his disciples.
