The Portuguese government has decided to ration water in the east of the drought-ridden tourist region of the Algarve. The aim is to eventually reduce groundwater use by 15%.

According to the government, 36% of the Portuguese territory is currently in a situation of severe or extreme drought. The Iberian Peninsula is the region of Europe most severely affected by this phenomenon. The European Copernicus Observatory says 91.9% of Portugal is affected by drought, 25.8% of which is on alert.
