A bomb from the Second World War may have been found during an explosive ordnance test on the Rheinstrasse bridge at the western entrance to Darmstadt. The diversion route for vehicle traffic in the area of the “Am Kavalleriesand” street will be completely closed on Thursday, April 18th at around 9 a.m.

The road closure is “initially only necessary to clear the affected area in order to rule out any danger to third parties," according to the city's statement. The city announced on Wednesday that "further measures are required." The exploratory work is necessary in order to be able to carry out the planned construction work on the dilapidated bridge, which runs. over the tracks of the Main-Neckar Railway south of Darmstadt Central Station and is to be renewed. Rail traffic has not yet been affected by a closure of the diversion route southwest of the bridge.
