The Digital Markets Act, which comes into force this Thursday, intends to break the monopoly of the App Store and the Play Store. Apple and Google are strongly urged to open their mobile operating systems, iOS and Android, to alternative and independent application download stores.

After dragging its feet, Apple allows it in its iOS 17.4 update downloadable on iPhone since this Thursday. Google should quickly follow with a new version of Android. The pressure from the European Union is maximum after a period of six months for compliance.
