France's public deficit exceeded 5.5% of its gross domestic product (GDP) last year. A figure much higher than the 4.9% initially planned by the executive.

The news comes at a bad time as the government has recently shown its determination to get back on track in Europe. Moody's agency has deemed it "unlikely" that the government will achieve its deficit target of 4.4% of GDP in 2024 and less than 3% in 2027.
