Russia stops efforts to find 13 miners trapped underground. Miners specializing in tunneling found themselves trapped at a depth of around 125 meters by a landslide on March 18 in a gold mine in the Amur region.

Hundreds of rescuers dispatched to the site were trying to clear the debris and dig tunnels up to them. This situation put “mortal danger” for rescuers and mine employees involved in operations to find the miners, the company explained. Accidents in mines in Russia, as elsewhere in the former USSR, remain frequent and are often linked to lax application of safety rules.
