Sara Melgarejo was 25 years old when she gave birth to her first child in a hospital in Santiago, Chile. A nurse took the baby away from her before the new mother could pick it up or even hear her cry.
A year or so later, on November 19, 1984, Sara gave birth again. The health personnel immediately removed the creature from the enclosure. The baby had not survived. While Sara mourned her losses, in a town in Virginia, Rose Hiebart and her husband, Steve Ours, received the call they had been waiting for.
