Cases of collisions have been growing since November, coinciding with the disruption of maritime traffic in the area. The Houthi attacks in the southern Red Sea, through which around 15% of global maritime trade sailed before the current crisis, have led the world's main shipping companies to divert their ships and circumnavigate Africa.

The country that has mobilized the most to stop the rise in piracy has been India, which has the largest naval deployment in the waters of the Arabian Sea. Currently, experts and monitoring groups indicate that it is most likely that there are between two and four organized groups of pirates active in the region. This is a region with a long fishing tradition, which for years has been harmed by overfishing by foreign companies and the long civil war in Somalia. In the last year, Puntland has also suffered from increasing political instability, which is pointed out as a possible cause of the initial reactivation of pirate networks. The first type of attacks can be carried out by fishermen, while the larger ones usually involve more professional and structured pirates.
