Stieg Larsson died in 2004 at the age of 50 and did not get to enjoy the success of the Millennium trilogy. Eva Gabrielsson, his partner for more than three decades, did not see a cent of an inheritance estimated at $250 million.

The key character of the series, Lisbeth Salander, was left at the mercy of hired writers. In December 2013, after the legal battle, Larsson's father and brother gave the green light to publishing house Norstedts to continue the saga.
