Sweden will spend 385 million crowns (33 million euros) to strengthen its fallout shelters, emergency services and civil defense. The funds will also go towards upgrading fallout shelters and the water supply system.

Sweden cut its military spending after the end of the Cold War but reversed the trend after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), responsible for coordinating preparations in the event of a crisis, is calling for a budget of 20 billion crowns. The minister sparked controversy in January, declaring at a defense conference that “there could be a war in Sweden” The Swedish government joined NATO in early March and is expected to reach 2% of GDP by 2024, the objective set by NATO for its civil defense budget. The MSB, which is responsible for Coordinating Preparedness in the Event of a Crisis, wants to spend 20 billion Swedish crowns, or about $30 billion, in the next five years.
