Fire broke out during work carried out in the basement of a 16-story residential building located in Gayrettepe, a district of the central Besiktas district. Istanbul Governor Davut Gül told journalists that a nightclub was located in the building.
“The fire has been brought under control. Let's hope there are no more victims,” he said, offering his “condolences” to the victims' relatives. The governorate said in a press release announcing the opening of an investigation.
