Taiwan expects Chancellor Olaf Scholz to give a clear warning against the use of military force against the island republic during his visit to China. Taiwan's representative in Germany, Jhy-Wey Shieh, wants Germany to show a military presence in the strait between Taiwan and China.
The Green Party and the CDU/CSU have also called on ScholZ to confront the Chinese government with critical issues. The German and European economies are heavily dependent on semiconductors from Taiwan, this could then be used by China as an “economic, technological weapon” The People’s Republic of China considers the democratic island of 23 million people to be part of its territory and rejects any form of official diplomatic contacts between Taipei and other countries. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, fears have been growing that China could annex Taiwan. The Chinese leadership has repeatedly threatened to conquer the island. It would be a “sign” to China if things were different for the upcoming mission.
