In 1950 Iran became the second Muslim country, after Turkey, to recognize the State of Israel. Israel imports 40% of its oil needs from Iran in exchange for weapons, technology and agricultural products.

Israel accuses Iran and Hezbollah of being involved in numerous attacks against Israeli or Jewish interests abroad. In July 2015, Iran concluded an agreement with the major Western powers to put a stop to its nuclear program. Israel, an unofficial nuclear power, supports the U.S. decision to pull out of the agreement with Iran in 2018. The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution this week condemning Iran's nuclear program, calling it a threat to the world's security. The resolution also condemned Iran's support for Hezbollah and Bashar al-Assad's regime in Syria, calling for an end to Iran's influence in the Middle East. The United Nations Security Council voted to condemn Iran's uranium enrichment activities in Isfahan in September 2014, saying it was a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the use of nuclear weapons.
