African countries are facing infectious and non-communicable diseases at the same time with very limited resources. The number of diabetic people in Africa is expected to rise from 19 million in 2019 to 47 million in 2045.

Diabetes has gone from being the leading cause of absenteeism from work to being the third most common cause of death in Africa. African cities are trying to regulate the amount of sugar and salt in school cafeterias and hospitals with a municipal program. In South Africa, 47% of women over 20 years of age and 15% of men are obese.
