Hissam Hussein Dehaini, the former mayor of Araucaria, Brazil, married Kawan Rood, a former beauty queen, a year ago. The couple have faced an outpouring of hate over the past year due to their unorthodox — but not illegal — relationship.

She asks sarcastically: "A year of wanting to know: fans or haters?", according to her Instagram post. According to the Brazilian Civil Code "a man and a woman over the age of 16 can marry, but this requires the approval of both parents or their legal representatives, until they reach adulthood (age 18)" The politician married for the first time in 1980 (before his mother-in-law was born) and has no less than 16 children. Hissam, who was in his second term as mayor, made his fortune as a businessman with an estimated fortune of 10 million shekels (14 million Brazilian reals)
