Some 400 lots from the library of Léopold Sédar Senghor are at stake. The Senegalese state bought the complex ‘to preserve the national heritage’ The heiress of the former president would, however, insist, at all costs, on proceeding with this sale.

A few hours before the fateful hammer blows, the countdown is on so that the treasures of the man who forever marked the history of Africa and the dialogue of cultures are not scattered, writes Agnes Poirier-Bruno. The auction will take place on Tuesday in Caen, with the lots offered from 20 to 3,000 euros each – from 20,000 to 5,000 euro each. It is hoped that a buyer could be found, and that the library would have its place in the National Library of France, in Dakar, says Poilier-Bonnier. The collection includes many rare works, bound by the president and signed by their authors, she adds.
