The level groups in mathematics and French announced loudly by Gabriel Attal at the end of last year will never see the light of day. On the pretext that these level groups would have instituted a “social sorting” between students, most teaching unions were strongly against their establishment.
A National Education memo published this week provides in their place for nebulous “need groups”, not obligatory for all courses and left to the initiative of the teaching teams. This looks a lot like a first-class funeral.
