Residents of Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast, report that their houses are demolished without notice, and often without compensation. Some Ivorians report that this is the latest of many attempts by the authorities to beautify the city.

The NGO Movimiento Colombe Côte d'Ivoire, which is responsible for helping evicted families, has recorded destruction of more than 40,000 homes in the last decade. More than 14,400 families were evicted, according to the Government.
