The face of a 6th century Chinese emperor reconstructed from DNA. Thanks to the DNA extracted from his bones, found in the tomb discovered by archaeologists in 1996.

This is Emperor Wu, ruler of the Northern Zhou dynasty from 560 to 578 AD, who unified part of ancient China after defeating the Northern Qi dynasty. He died at just 36 years old, perhaps from a stroke, as suggested by the study led by the Chinese Fudan and Xiamen Universities. The results shed light on the origins and migratory movements of the nomadic Xianbei people, to whom the emperor belonged.
