Iran and Israel have had a hostile relationship since the Islamic Revolution in Iran, based on religious, geopolitical and ideological differences. Syria has become a key battleground in their struggle for influence and dominance.

Iran, with a strict view of Shiite Islam, supports the Syrian government under President Assad by providing troops, weapons and financial support. Iran's goal is to liberate Jerusalem from the so-called "Zionist occupation". The Al-Aqsa Mosque in the historic city is considered the first place of prayer for Muslims. The international community has reacted with concern to the escalation of the conflict and called for de-escalation. Experts say the complex geopolitical interests and deep-rooted hostilities between Iran and Israel make a peaceful resolution difficult. Many assume that Iran wants to prevent a comprehensive conflict with Israel, and therefore very likely also the USA, in order not to endanger previous achievements and influence in the region. Iran is also in very serious economic difficulties. The weak economy is unlikely to be able to cope with a war.
