The Francisco Franco Foundation says it has changed its statutes to try to prevent its illegalization. The Government has confirmed that it will do in the short term.

The organization seeks a “shield” against the memory law, after the Government confirmed that its short-term future is “extinction.” The announcement comes after the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, confirmed last Friday that, “if a foundation, space or place commemorates, honors or glories someone who was a repressor, it has no meaning within democracy” “We do not illegalize the foundation, what we do is extinguish it,” he added, when asked directly about the future of the Francisco Franco foundation. The change in the statutes announced by the foundation may be something to take into account but it would not have to be decisive if, for example, the articles that the entity publishes on its website or the events it organizes continue to imply an apology for Francoism.
