Guatemala's former President Alejandro Giammattei paid a law firm in the United States to “politically persecute” two former prosecutors of the Public Ministry (MP) exiled in that country. President Bernardo Arévalo accused the MP of plotting a coup against him to prevent him taking office last year.

The president cannot dismiss the attorney general, but he uses other mechanisms to try to combat corrupt practices in the government. This would be the second coup attempt by President ArÉvalo against Porras in a week.
