Ricardo was the third son of the ill-fated marriage between Henry II and the beautiful Eleanor of Aquitaine. In 1170, Richard joined the rebellion against his father led by Eleanor and her older brother, Henry.

Richard dedicated himself to putting down the rebellions of his subjects in the French possessions. With the help of the King of France, Louis VII, he attacked his father once again and was thus able to access the throne of England after he died of disgust at such humiliation.
