Syrian Archbishop Hilarion Capucci was arrested in East Jerusalem in August 1974. He smuggled a large quantity of weapons into Israel through the Rosh Haniqra crossing.

Capucci also smuggled Katyushas, Kalashnikovs, grenades and pistols into Israel, and on one occasion liquor. The Vatican exerted heavy pressure on Israel to release Capucci and close the affair, but unlike the Al-Adwan incident this week, Israel did not surrender. Jordan's King Abdullah overwhelmed Israel and it exempted itself too quickly from treating him as she did with Capucci.
