The majority of EU subsidies go to the most climate-damaging part of agriculture. The EU pays 45 billion euros to farmers to produce meat, eggs and dairy products every year.

Meat, milk and cheese are only responsible for 84 percent of greenhouse gases in agriculture. Growing vegetables causes far fewer emissions. The study authors are calling for a reform of EU agricultural subsidies for agriculture. This would not only be more climate-friendly, but would also lead to greater food security and better land use.
