The Middle East has a'sextortion' problem. One in five people in Jordan, Lebanon and Palestine has been subjected to this blackmail or knows someone who has, according to a Transparency International survey.
Women are especially vulnerable, and most cases go unreported. In Yemen, Fadya Salman, 27, began sending him naked photos of herself from her home in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen, but he threatened to post them online. Eventually, his family found out what happened and, in 2022, she was murdered.
