Scientists find first known plant species that transforms decaying tissue into a new source of nutrients. The tree fern, known as Cyathea rojaiana, transforms the inner part of its dead or dying leaves.

Researchers believe the fern's adaptation allows it to take advantage of pockets of nutrients in the nearby topsoil. By converting existing leaf material into roots, the plant will most likely save energy, experts say. That could help you in the “ battle for nutrients” in your part of the rainforest.
