The National Rally has returned to its roots as a party of the far-right. But the party's future is in doubt after the election of Emmanuel Macron as its new leader.

The party has been in disarray since the defeat of Jean-Marie Le Pen in the 2012 presidential election. The National Rally was founded in 1972 by a group of former members of the French National Assembly. It is the first time since the Second World War that the party has had a majority in the French parliament.
