The surprising real estate boom in Ukraine. More than 3,000 residential buildings, which have become an iconic feature of the cityscape of kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, were built after World War II.

These structures, simple and unadorned, are made of red bricks, rise five stories and are not equipped with elevators. These prefabricated buildings, called khrushchevkas, date back to the era of Soviet leaders Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev and Leonid Brezhnev.
