Waves of Palestinians entered the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis on Monday to salvage what they could from the vast destruction caused by the Israeli offensive. Many returned to the Gaza Strip's second largest city to find their former hometown unrecognizable.

With dozens of buildings destroyed or damaged, there are now piles of rubble where apartments and businesses once stood. The streets have been razed. The fighting has damaged schools and hospitals. According to Israeli authorities, 1,200 people, mostly civilians, died and about 250 were taken hostage.
