Across the United States, workers earn a median annual salary of about $48,080. But in the three states where workers earn the least, the average annual salary is below $40,000 a year.

All but two of the 10 lowest-wage states are in the South. Mississippi has the lowest-income population in the country, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The cost of living is relatively cheap in most of these states, with Oklahoma and South Carolina among the cheapest.
