The government of Tierra del Fuego wants to change the names of the South Georgia and South Sandwich archipelagos. They argue that the change is based on historical, cultural and identity issues.

South Georgia would be renamed San Pedro Islands, and the South Sandwich Islands would be Esquivel Islands. This comes after President Javier Javier Milei's visit to Ushuaia, where he met with Laura Richardson, the powerful military leader of the powerful U.S. Southern Command. The head of the Southern Command is concerned about the military base that the Chinese installed in Neuquén, in addition to the joint naval base in the city of Neuqén. The two islands are both of English origin, taking into account the conflict over the Malvinas, the government of the province says. The change in names is expected to take place in 2024, according to the province's secretary of foreign affairs, Andrés Dachary, who made a formal presentation to the National Geographic Institute.
