Taylor and Drew Deras, both RNs, began working the night shift in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Methodist Women's Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. When Ella was admitted to the NICU in May 2021, she was only 23 weeks old and weighed one pound, two ounces.

“When Ella's birth mother found out we were interested in adopting her, she told us, 'I want Ella to come with you,'” Taylor said.
